Final

I liked the way that we did the final. I was a little nervous before I went in, but then it turned out not to be so bad. I liked telling about what I had learned about technology even if it was just power point. Plus I really liked seeing what the other students did. When they showed it as their presentation it didn't seem so impossible to do. It gave me a little bet of comfort that I might be able to do some of the things that they did as well. It was a good way to do a final, especially since that is what we'd been learning about.

Scholar.google

I'm excited to be able to use Scholar.google because so many times I need scholarly references for research and searching on the web I get a million random websites that have nothing to do with research. It will be very nice to cut research time down. I'll be trying it within the next few days because I have a few research papers due and I'll let everyone know how I liked it.

Christ as the perfect teacher

I thought that it was interesting that in class today we talked about Christ as the perfect example of a perfect teacher and why. He was the teacher that I would like to be. He taught the people simply and built upon their previous knowledge so that they could follow along. He taught line upon line, precept upon precept. I will not be able to expect that all my students will be able to understand everything at the same time. I will need to take my teaching at a pace that they can follow and build on their past knowledge.
He was also a very patient teacher. This is also something that I will need to do in order to become a good teacher. A lot of times the people that he taught didn't understand what he said, but he didn't yell at them or tell them they should've been paying attention. He just loved them and tried to teach them again. I need to be patient with the students that don't understand what I teach right away. I need to have patience and continue to try and teach them.
It is also important for me to love all my students. Christ loved everyone, even those who messed up and he didn't hold it against them. I need to do the same thing. Even if a student drives me crazy I can't hold it against them for the rest of the semester or always think of that student as the difficult one. I need to love that student anyways.
These are just different thoughts that I had about the discussion that we had in class today.

New Lesson Proposal

Since I don't think that the Power Point assignment that I was going to do will count, I figured that I would just change my assignment and hope that this counts. I will be learning how to do this as well.
-My proposed lesson plan is to have my students use excel to make a chart about what they found out after interviewing twenty people using the question:
1. Do you know Spanish?
2. Then reading a paragraph in Spanish to them
3. Then having them tell you everyithing that they understood from the paragraph that you just read.
4. According to they knew: nothing, a little bit, about half, the majority, or all of it.
-The subject is Spanish and it would be for a beginning level class.
-The State Core Curriculum would be number 3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes.
-The technology used would be excel and so they would need a computer for every small group of 2 or 3 students.
-I will create a chart on excel using my findings as I have interviewed 20 people.
-I will address the ethical issue of making sure that students do thier own work and not to borrow ideas from other students or other people.

Technology in the future

Today in class we talked about technology in the future. I think that it is interesting because today we pretty much need to know about technology and how to use computers and stuff like that. This is still very difficult for me but I am doing better. I think thaat in the future computers will be even more used by everyone. It'll be something that you can't do without. One problem that I see is that there will still be the poorer schools that can't afford computers. The students in those school will be at more of a disadvantage than they even are today. A lot of schools are just getting the technology, but some who knows if they ever will. I think that for example, the internet is a great resource and makes research a lot easier. Maybe (I don't know if they already do) but they should have a way to go and search and only get information that is acredited. Instead of getting a huge long list and half the stuff is junk. Free phone calls to anyone in the world would be awsome. I think that it will get a lot easier to get information. It might be a little more scary again though becuase it is already easy for people to get information about anyone on the internet, but they'll be able to get even more information and faster and easier. That is something that isn't good. I guess we'll just see what happens.

Lesson Plan Overview

My proposed lesson plan is to have my students create a power point presentation on a grammatical concept. They will be able to teach this concept to the class. This will be for and intermediate Spanish class. It will be nice for them to do it so that they really learn the concepts and they can try and be creative and so that the grammar lessons won't be so boring. It will give a little bit of variety. Students will then be more likely to become involved. They will actually need to become the expert on a certain topic and present it to the class like the teacher.
I guess that some ethical issues that I will need to address will be to have the students make sure that they come up with their own material. They will be encouraged to use their text book to learn the concept, but it won't count to just copy what they text book says onto their presentation. They will need to always be careful when looking on the internet for pictures or anything so that they don't get trapped in some other website that they didn't mean to get to.
I will be identifying the Utah State Core Curriculum Standard Number 3 which states that: students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes. THey will be presenting grammar principles to their class.
The technology that will be used will be the internet and the power point program.
I will also create an example of a grammar presentation.

Reflection on Technology and Ethics

I thought that the information on ethics and technology was useful. I liked discussing it in groups and learning more about other topics as well as the one that I had researced with my group. One thing that I thought was really interesting was the topic of safety and privacy. She told us that it is important to chang passwords every few months and to have different passwords for different things. I didn't realize that so much of my own personal information could be available to anyone who went looking for it. It's kinda crazy. I do admit that it made me a little nervous. Another thing that she talked about that will specifically relate to me and Spanish teaching is the use of chat rooms and stuff like that. I would like my students to have email buddies from other Spanish speaking countries, but I will have to be careful and monitor them in class and also warn them of the dangers of using chat rooms and other forms of contact on the computer with people that they don't know becuase there are a lot of people who stalk those that they get to know on the internet. I won't encourage chat rooms or anything, but I do realize that it does happen. Another thing that we learned about that I thought was very important was about copyright laws and fair use. I will have to be very careful with using things that are copyrighted to make sure that I am using them correctly so that I don't get in trouble for it. I would like to use Spanish songs in my classes so I need to know that I can't make copies for the class of more than 10 seconds of the song. Usually though, if it used for educational purposes and it doesn't compete with the author receiving money for his or her own work than a lot of times it is ok to use. But it is good to be well informed just in case. Also I need to know the rules for making photo copies of materials for my class so that it is not very much of the text unless I write to the person with the copyright and get special permission. Those are some of the things that I found very interesting about the talk that we had on ethics and technology and things that we have to watch for. I thought the mini lessons were interesting.

roxana_law_Ip.doc

I'm just going to post this on my blog as well because I keep trying to send it and post it on the Discussion board on blackboard and it won't go, so I'll just post it here and then try again later to post it on blackboard. So here is my outline for the first project. I don't know if it counts or anything, but at least than it shows that I did it.

Name: Roxana Law
Section Number: Monday 4:00 – 4:50

Spanish Music

Summary:

Students will have the opportunity to create a power point presentation for a song that they like in Spanish. They will pick out 5-7 vocabulary words from the song and then present them on the power point with the definitions of the words. Then they can present it to the class and teach the class the new song and also explain the song to the class in Spanish.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

• Students will be able to make a power point presentation
• Students will be able to learn new vocabulary words and find ways to teach their classmates the words as well.
• They will be able to present the song and it’s meaning to the class in Spanish.
• All students will be able to present their knowledge of the new vocabulary words.

Core Curriculum Standard:

Spanish, Intermediate Spanish Class (could be adapted for lower levels or upper levels as well).
http://www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=4700
Standard Three: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes.

Materials and Technologies Used:

• Power Point Program
• Computer
• Projector
• White Screen
• CD Player

Instructional Procedures:

Attention Getter: An example of the song and power point presentation that I did.
Outline:
1: Explain to the students the requirements for the assignment. Hand out the rubrics to each student. 10 minutes
2: show my example of the assignment as a kind of guide 10 minutes
3: Give them 15 minutes to look on the internet for words to some Spanish songs that they might want to do.
4: For the remainder of class start with Lesson 5 in the book about the culture in Argentina
5: Students will need to know what song that they will do for next class and have the words with them.

The second day of class
1. Bring a song and start looking up the definitions to the vocabulary words.
2. Find examples and pictures on the internet to present the vocabulary words.
3. Put the power point presentation together.
This should probably take the whole class period, but if kids get done early they can do the folder assignments (pink folder) for extra credit or they can make up an assignment that they’ve missed in that time.

The third day
1. Start with the presentations.
2. The presentations would be three students each day. Each presentation should be about 10 minutes. (so that they don’t get bored of the constant songs. We actually will be trying to learn the songs.)
3. After the songs are presented then we will have a discussion about the song and the singer and why the students picked that particular song. This conversation will be done only in Spanish. (If the students appear to be done with the song conversation and are getting bored then we will continue on with part two of Lesson 5 that we started the first day of this assignment.)

Assessment Plan:

Each student will be assed according to their actual power point presentation content and their ability to present it to the class.

Power Point Presentation Content
5 10 15 20
Vocabulary words chosen (Are there at least 5 words? Are they words that the class already knows? Can have one word that the class knows especially if the student doing the presentation didn’t know it before hand.)
Examples and pictures used to define the words. (Do they correctly describe the word?)
Are the words to the song (or portion of the song that we are learning, on the presentation so that we can sing along? Or optional students can make copies of the words of the song to hand out to the class.)
Is the song appropriate for our class? Is it at our level (nothing like the itsy bitsy spider for an intermediate class.)

In Class Presentation
5 10 15 20
Did you explain the vocabulary? (not just showing the picture, but actually describing it and giving verbal examples as well)
Did you explain what the song was about? (doesn’t have to be a line for line explanation, but at least the chorus and the general idea of the song)
Was the presentation done in Spanish?

Technology Evaluation:

I think that the technology will impact my classroom because they will be giving the lesson and participating in their classmates presentations. They will have the chance to teach each other. I think that it will be good as well in developing their speaking skills because they will have to give their presentations in Spanish.
It will strengthen the subject matter because they will be learning vocabulary and they will be able to see the words that they are learning. Plus it will be easier for the students giving the presentations because they have an outline on what to speak about because they have the pictures and they know the song and what it’s about. They will be more comfortable with the language.

Lesson Plan Proposal

The focus for my lesson plan is to have my students make a power point presentation. I'm going to make a power point presentation for a song. It will show main vocabulary for the song and pictures so that the students can see what each word means. I think that it helps a lot to be able to picture what a new word means. Then along with the new words they can learn a cool song.

The subject is Spanish level 2.

The Utah Core Curriculum Standard that this lesson will be addressing is Standard three that says that: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes.

The technology to be used in the lesson plan is power point.

I'll create an example of vocab and an activity for a song that I will teach the class. Along with the presentation I will also explain and give verbal examples as well so that it will include a variety of teaching styles for the different students.

Hopefully this project will work. I think that it will be very useful for me to learn how to use power point.
