I was a little nervous before I went in, but then it turned out not to be so bad. I liked telling about what I had learned about technology even if it was just power point. Plus I really liked seeing what the other students did. When they showed it as their presentation it didn't seem so impossible to do. It gave me a little bet of comfort that I might be able to do some of the things that they did as well. It was a good way to do a final, especially since that is what we'd been learning about.

Scholar.google

I'm excited to be able to use Scholar.google because so many times I need scholarly references for research and searching on the web I get a million random websites that have nothing to do with research. He was the teacher that I would like to be. He taught the people simply and built upon their previous knowledge so that they could follow along. He taught line upon line, precept upon precept. I will not be able to expect that all my students will be able to understand everything at the same time. I will need to take my teaching at a pace that they can follow and build on their past knowledge.
He was also a very patient teacher. This is also something that I will need to do in order to become a good teacher. A lot of times the people that he taught didn't understand what he said, but he didn't yell at them or tell them they should've been paying attention. He just loved them and tried to teach them again. I need to be patient with the students that don't understand what I teach right away. I need to have patience and continue to try and teach them.
It is also important for me to love all my students. Christ loved everyone, even those who messed up and he didn't hold it against them. I need to do the same thing. Even if a student drives me crazy I can't hold it against them for the rest of the semester or always think of that student as the difficult one. I need to love that student anyways.
These are just different thoughts that I had about the discussion that we had in class today.

New Lesson Proposal

Since I don't think that the Power Point assignment that I was going to do will count, I figured that I would just change my assignment and hope that this counts. I will be learning how to do this as well.
-My proposed lesson plan is to have my students use excel to make a chart about what they found out after interviewing twenty people using the question:
1. Do you know Spanish?
2. Then reading a paragraph in Spanish to them
3. Then having them tell you everyithing that they understood from the paragraph that you just read.
4. According to they knew: nothing, a little bit, about half, the majority, or all of it.
-The subject is Spanish and it would be for a beginning level class.
-The State Core Curriculum would be number 3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes.
-The technology used would be excel and so they would need a computer for every small group of 2 or 3 students.
-I will create a chart on excel using my findings as I have interviewed 20 people.
-I will address the ethical issue of making sure that students do thier own work and not to borrow ideas from other students or other people.

Technology in the future

Today in class we talked about technology in the future. I think that it is interesting because today we pretty much need to know about technology and how to use computers and stuff like that. This is still very difficult for me but I am doing better. I think thaat in the future computers will be even more used by everyone. It'll be something that you can't do without. One problem that I see is that there will still be the poorer schools that can't afford computers. The students in those school will be at more of a disadvantage than they even are today. A lot of schools are just getting the technology, but some who knows if they ever will. I think that for example, the internet is a great resource and makes research a lot easier. Maybe (I don't know if they already do) but they should have a way to go and search and only get information that is acredited. Instead of getting a huge long list and half the stuff is junk. Free phone calls to anyone in the world would be awsome. I think that it will get a lot easier to get information. It might be a little more scary again though becuase it is already easy for people to get information about anyone on the internet, but they'll be able to get even more information and faster and easier. That is something that isn't good. I guess we'll just see what happens.

Lesson Plan Overview

My proposed lesson plan is to have my students create a power point presentation on a grammatical concept. They will be able to teach this concept to the class. This will be for and intermediate Spanish class. It will be nice for them to do it so that they really learn the concepts and they can try and be creative and so that the grammar lessons won't be so boring. It will give a little bit of variety. Students will then be more likely to become involved. They will actually need to become the expert on a certain topic and present it to the class like the teacher.
I guess that some ethical issues that I will need to address will be to have the students make sure that they come up with their own material. They will be encouraged to use their text book to learn the concept, but it won't count to just copy what they text book says onto their presentation. They will need to always be careful when looking on the internet for pictures or anything so that they don't get trapped in some other website that they didn't mean to get to.
I will be identifying the Utah State Core Curriculum Standard Number 3 which states that: students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes. THey will be presenting grammar principles to their class.
The technology that will be used will be the internet and the power point program.
I will also create an example of a grammar presentation.

Reflection on Technology and Ethics

I thought that the information on ethics and technology was useful. I liked discussing it in groups and learning more about other topics as well as the one that I had researced with my group. One thing that I thought was really interesting was the topic of safety and privacy. She told us that it is important to chang passwords every few months and to have different passwords for different things. I didn't realize that so much of my own personal information could be available to anyone who went looking for it. It's kinda crazy. I do admit that it made me a little nervous. Another thing that she talked about that will specifically relate to me and Spanish teaching is the use of chat rooms and stuff like that. I would like my students to have email buddies from other Spanish speaking countries, but I will have to be careful and monitor them in class and also warn them of the dangers of using chat rooms and other forms of contact on the computer with people that they don't know becuase there are a lot of people who stalk those that they get to know on the internet. I won't encourage chat rooms or anything, but I do realize that it does happen. Another thing that we learned about that I thought was very important was about copyright laws and fair use. I will have to be very careful with using things that are copyrighted to make sure that I am using them correctly so that I don't get in trouble for it. I would like to use Spanish songs in my classes so I need to know that I can't make copies for the class of more than 10 seconds of the song. Usually though, if it used for educational purposes and it doesn't compete with the author receiving money for his or her own work than a lot of times it is ok to use. But it is good to be well informed just in case. Also I need to know the rules for making photo copies of materials for my class so that it is not very much of the text unless I write to the person with the copyright and get special permission. Those are some of the things that I found very interesting about the talk that we had on ethics and technology and things that we have to watch for. I thought the mini lessons were interesting.

roxana_law_Ip.doc

I'm just going to post this on my blog as well because I keep trying to send it and post it on the Discussion board on blackboard and it won't go, so I'll just post it here and then try again later to post it on blackboard. So here is my outline for the first project. I don't know if it counts or anything, but at least than it shows that I did it.

Name: Roxana Law
Section Number: Monday 4:00 – 4:50

Spanish Music

Summary:

Students will have the opportunity to create a power point presentation for a song that they like in Spanish. They will pick out 5-7 vocabulary words from the song and then present them on the power point with the definitions of the words. Then they can present it to the class and teach the class the new song and also explain the song to the class in Spanish.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

•	Students will be able to make a power point presentation
•	Students will be able to learn new vocabulary words and find ways to teach their classmates the words as well.
•	They will be able to present the song and it’s meaning to the class in Spanish.
•	All students will be able to present their knowledge of the new vocabulary words.

Core Curriculum Standard:

Spanish, Intermediate Spanish Class (could be adapted for lower levels or upper levels as well).
http://www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=4700
Standard Three: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes.

Materials and Technologies Used:

•	Power Point Program
•	Computer
•	Projector
•	White Screen
•	CD Player

Instructional Procedures:

Attention Getter: An example of the song and power point presentation that I did.
Outline:
1: Explain to the students the requirements for the assignment. Hand out the rubrics to each student. 10 minutes
2:	show my example of the assignment as a kind of guide 10 minutes
3:	Give them 15 minutes to look on the internet for words to some Spanish songs that they might want to do.
4:	For the remainder of class start with Lesson 5 in the book about the culture in Argentina
5: Students will need to know what song that they will do for next class and have the words with them.

The second day of class
1.	Bring a song and start looking up the definitions to the vocabulary words.
2.	Find examples and pictures on the internet to present the vocabulary words.
3.	Put the power point presentation together.
This should probably take the whole class period, but if kids get done early they can do the folder assignments (pink folder) for extra credit or they can make up an assignment that they’ve missed in that time.

The third day
1.	Start with the presentations.
2.	The presentations would be three students each day. Each presentation should be about 10 minutes. (so that they don’t get bored of the constant songs. We actually will be trying to learn the songs.)
3. After the songs are presented then we will have a discussion about the song and the singer and why the students picked that particular song. This conversation will be done only in Spanish. (If the students appear to be done with the song conversation and are getting bored then we will continue on with part two of Lesson 5 that we started the first day of this assignment.)

Assessment Plan:

Each student will be assed according to their actual power point presentation content and their ability to present it to the class.

Power Point Presentation Content
5	10	15	20
Vocabulary words chosen (Are there at least 5 words? Are they words that the class already knows? Can have one word that the class knows especially if the student doing the presentation didn’t know it before hand.)
Examples and pictures used to define the words. (Do they correctly describe the word?)
Are the words to the song (or portion of the song that we are learning, on the presentation so that we can sing along? Or optional students can make copies of the words of the song to hand out to the class.)
Is the song appropriate for our class? Is it at our level (nothing like the itsy bitsy spider for an intermediate class.)

In Class Presentation
5	10	15	20
Did you explain the vocabulary? (not just showing the picture, but actually describing it and giving verbal examples as well)
Did you explain what the song was about? (doesn’t have to be a line for line explanation, but at least the chorus and the general idea of the song)
Was the presentation done in Spanish?

Technology Evaluation:

I think that the technology will impact my classroom because they will be giving the lesson and participating in their classmates presentations. They will have the chance to teach each other. I think that it will be good as well in developing their speaking skills because they will have to give their presentations in Spanish.
It will strengthen the subject matter because they will be learning vocabulary and they will be able to see the words that they are learning. Plus it will be easier for the students giving the presentations because they have an outline on what to speak about because they have the pictures and they know the song and what it’s about. They will be more comfortable with the language.

Lesson Plan Proposal

The focus for my lesson plan is to have my students make a power point presentation. I'm going to make a power point presentation for a song. It will show main vocabulary for the song and pictures so that the students can see what each word means. I think that it helps a lot to be able to picture what a new word means. Then along with the new words they can learn a cool song.

The subject is Spanish level 2.

The Utah Core Curriculum Standard that this lesson will be addressing is Standard three that says that: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners and readers for a variety of purposes.

The technology to be used in the lesson plan is power point.

I'll create an example of vocab and an activity for a song that I will teach the class. Along with the presentation I will also explain and give verbal examples as well so that it will include a variety of teaching styles for the different students.

Hopefully this project will work. I think that it will be very useful for me to learn how to use power point.

What technology is most important in our field?

So the question for the week is; What technology is most important in our field and why. There are a few technologies that would be useful. I think that it would be really useful to have a webpage for the class and for students to participate in making parts of the webpage with things that they think would be most useful to them. There are a lot of students who are geniuses on the computer so I would let them take care of a lot of things, especially since I'm so bad at it. Another form of technology would be videos in general. The students could even make videos using Imovie and stuff. It could be very useful to them. They could watch videos from other cultures. If it was possible we could even have a school that our school would talk with and email and stuff and they could do interactive videos back and forth between the schools. It could be fun for both and the students could see how the different schools are set up in other countries and how their cities look and everything. It's an idea that we saw on the computer when we were looking up Imovies. Ok well I think that's all for now.

10/11/04 assignment

I watched the online movies with my group and our assignment is posted on Mary's blog at
marpiece.blogspot.com

Wiki Page

I was actually wondering if someone could check the wiki page that I have been working on with Alise and let me know if there is anything else that I needed to add, or if I should explain the websites more or anything. This has already happened a few times. I editted the wiki page one day and I pushed save and everything, And then when I went back later to look at it, the changes that I made were gone. Does anyone know why that keeps happening? Am I doing something wrong? I'm going to post 2 of the websites on here, just in case they get erased again, becuase they're good ones and I don't want to not be able to find them again or something like that.
http://etc.sccoe.k12.ca.us/i2000/00mod/l_mm/imov.html
http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/import.html

Digital Resource assignment

I really hope that I'm doing this right. I'm not quite sure how to add a link onto this blog so I'll just write down the websites and hopefully that counts.
I found teh Utah State Core Curriculum Standard on www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=4700 I liked standard number two that says that students understand, interpret, and respond to written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
I found a very interesting lesson plan on the website
www.artsedge.kennedy-center.org/content/3617/
The lesson plan is for lower grade levels but it has a fun activity where the students can read different Aesop Fables and then act them out.
This would be a great lesson plan to use in my classroom becuase then the students could read simple stories in Spanish and act them out in Spanish. I could divide them into groups and each could have a story and each could prepare a little skit in Spanish and perform the story. It would help a variety of different learners to understand the language better because it has reading, visual learning, and listening comprehension.

The core curriculum standard that I would use would be the same as I used the first time because this digital resource that I will use is still part of the same lesson plan. The first digital resource that I would use would be from the website
www.aesopfable.com
This website contains a variety of different Aesop Tales online. I would use the website to find different tales that the students could perform. Then I would translate it and hand them out to the students. Another alternative would be for the students to do a homework assignment of looking up the website on their own and finding a tale that they would like to perform. That way they can find one that they really like. The type of resource would be content collection because it contains the stories that I would like my students to use. It's a collection of many of the Aesop tales. It is a credible source becuase it has a copyright by John R. Long of Star systems and is rated with RSACi.
The second digital source also uses the same Utah core curriculum standard. The source can be found on
www.altavista.com
The resource has a link to translation page that translates English to Spanish. If I were to have my students translate the stories this would be a nice website for them to be able to look at to help in the translation. It's like an online dictionary. They would be able to get only direct translations though so it doesn't work very well to translate whole texts. This website is an example of an instructional source. It has a copyright of 2004, so it's current. It also is made by overture services, Inc. which is a credible source.
I hope that this was what I was supposed to do for the assignment. Let me know if I can make any corrections or anything.

Comments

Remember how I said that I'm not so good with technology, well that's still true. I don't know how to comment directly on people's blogs, so I decided to write another one with the title of comments. I like what everyone in my group said were their rules of thumb. I agree. Just as a warning I'm having trouble with names at the moment so if I write down your comment, without your name I'm really sorry. I think that it is very important to be creative with the use of technology, liek Mary said, I liked it how you said enough of the power points already. I don't know how to do power point, so I'm glad. Anyways, I was observing a Spanish class and I really liked what they did. It was around Valentine's Day and so all the students got into pairs and made a dating service video. It was really funny because they could film it around the school and they'd say, "I'm so and so, and I'm a Capricorn. I love long walks on the beach...(you get the idea)" and then they got to watch the video's later so that would be fun.
I also like that you said that Alise said that it was still important for teachers to use a variety of methods to teach and not to only get stuck using technology becuase everyone does learn differnt ways.
Also Elise said that all projects should have real world application. It will help the students to actually care what they're doing, so they're not just fulfilling a meaningless assignment.
Ok that's all for now.

Assignment 2

I'm finally starting to understand how this works. I think. So I'm doing the assignment about in what ways did my teachers use technology K-12. Truthfully they didn't really use the computer at all, which probably explains my complete handicap when it comes to computer technology. Elementary school, sometimes they used the overheads. In junior high and high school they mostly used overheads. Sometimes we'd watch videos in different classes which was interesting because then what we were learning came to life. In high school we had a computer program to disect frogs on, we could just clik on a part of the frog and see whatever's inside it. I guess that was useful, because I really didn't want to cut it open by myself. We would have to papers and things like that on the computer.
I think that I would advise my teachers to use more technology. There are tons of things that can be used on the computers and other things as well. The world is using so much technology lately and it's always changing, so even to teach students how to feel comfortable with the computer and to let them play around with it and try to figure things out would be useful. I wish that I would have had some practice with that. I would have like to do research on the internet for my classes. It would have been very useful to incorporate that into any of my classes. Maybe vocabulary power point presentations for Spanish or something like that would have been fun.

The 2 rules of thumb that I would say are important about using technology in the classroom is that
1. Technology is everywhere we go and it is important for students to become comfortable with it so that they can use it when they're out of school.
2. All students learn differently and so it will help the student learn better becuase they can learn from different sources.

Technology and teaching

I forgot how to check my blog to see if any of you have written of if anyone has started our blog conversations. I guess I'll just write how I think that technology can help in teaching a foriegn language. I figure that it can also mean using videos and things like that which can be very helpful because the students can see what they've been hearing. Since everyone learns different ways that would be very helpful for visual learners. Also using emails and blogs would help them communicate with people of other countries if we could set that up. They can use the internet to look up information about different countries. One of the projects that I want to do with my classes when I teach is to have them plan a vacation to a Spanish speaking country. They could research the city and how they plan on getting there and where they'll stay, what they'll do. Any ways, the internet would be very useful in helping them do that. Well I guess that's all for now. If someone wants to email me and let me know how I can check the blog lines and your responses that would be great.
